National ESI triage system for Ukraine<\/h1>\n

The Ukrainian healthcare system works under extreme conditions every day: Acts of war, destroyed medical infrastructure in a number of regions, massive flows of internally displaced persons and a corresponding increase in the burden on existing medical facilities require emergency care to be organized as efficiently as possible.<\/p>\n

There are currently no uniform standards for the initial assessment of patients in emergency departments. The decision as to who is treated first often depends on the subjective assessment and personal experience of the medical staff or even the persistence of the patient themselves. Patients in critical condition who need urgent medical attention are particularly at risk. Without a clear triage system, the risk of them not receiving timely care increases, with potentially tragic consequences. <\/p>\n

Under these circumstances, a standardized triage system becomes an indispensable tool. It not only helps to save lives, but also brings the Ukrainian healthcare system closer to European standards for quality and patient safety. <\/p>\n

The AGNF developed a training concept for the ESI triage system in Germany around 15 years ago. Since then, more than 1,000 professionals and multipliers have been trained, which has significantly facilitated the introduction and use of the system. <\/p>\n

The ESI Triage System (Emergency Severity Index) is a five-stage system for assessing patients in emergency departments. It is used to determine the urgency of treatment based on the patient’s state of health and expected resource requirements. <\/p>\n

Goal<\/h2>\n

Introduction of the ESI triage system at the Unbroken Medical Center Lviv and the development of a nationwide training strategy. Ternopil Medical University is to play a central role in expanding the training program to other regions in Ukraine and thus creating the basis for a uniform triage system throughout the country.\n<\/p>\n
