Improving care for the injured in Uganda

Injuries are one of the main causes of long-term disability or death worldwide – and affect low-income countries disproportionately. The mortality and long-term disability rate due to trauma is many times higher in Uganda than in Germany. This is partly due to the lack of adequate emergency care and trained staff. The aim of our project is to introduce certified International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) courses to strengthen the skills and knowledge of healthcare personnel and thus improve emergency care for injured people in Uganda.

Start
September 2021

Duration
3 years (until 30.4.2024)

Location
Uganda

Goal

The establishment of certified ITLS trauma courses in Uganda strengthens the knowledge and skills of health personnel and thus improves emergency care for injured people throughout the country.

Activities

  • February 2022: Procurement and handover of training materials and equipment to the local project partner Association of Ambulance Professionals Uganda (AAPU) to equip a training center where the ITLS courses will take place in the future and a first national ITLS course center is to be opened
  • Conducting an initial intensive course phase with international instructors, including an instructor course
  • Carrying out an interim evaluation of how the knowledge and skills learned by the participants have been put into practice
  • Supporting local partners in the implementation of further courses and in their process of becoming an official ITLS course center
  • Implementation of a further instructor course with international instructors
  • Official assessment by ITLS representatives to grant ITLS Course Center status to local partners

Promotion

Our project is supported by the Initiative Klinikpartnerschaften – Partner stärken Gesundheit. The funding program was initiated in 2016 by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) together with the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation. It supports partnerships between health organizations in Germany and medical facilities in low- and middle-income countries. The aim of the initiative is to improve healthcare services in developing and emerging countries by creating a platform on which various organizations can work together in partnership and benefit from the mutual transfer of knowledge at a professional level.
